PVC Fencing Maintenance Guide - How to Keep Your Fence Looking New
The complete guide to maintaining your PVC fence. Spoiler: it's almost nothing.
Annual Maintenance Checklist
| Task | Frequency | Time Required |
|---|---|---|
| Rinse panels with hose | 2–4 times per year | 15 minutes |
| Check post footings | Annually | 10 minutes |
| Check gate hinges and latch | Annually | 10 minutes |
| Inspect for damage after storms | After major storms | 15 minutes |
| Clean stubborn stains | As needed | 30 minutes |
Total annual maintenance time: approximately 2–3 hours. Compare that to timber fencing, which requires full repainting every 3–5 years.
How to Clean PVC Fencing
Routine Cleaning (2–4 times per year)
A garden hose is all you need for routine cleaning.
- Rinse panels from top to bottom
- Pay attention to the bottom rail where dirt accumulates
- Rinse post caps and gate hardware
- Done
Removing Stubborn Stains
Green algae or mould:
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water. Apply with a soft brush, leave for 10 minutes, rinse off. For heavy growth, use a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach, 10 parts water). Rinse thoroughly.
Dirt and mud:
Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid abrasive scrubbers; they can scratch the surface.
Grease or oil:
Apply a small amount of mineral spirits to a cloth. Wipe the affected area, then wash with soapy water and rinse.
Spray paint or graffiti:
Use a PVC-safe graffiti remover. Test on an inconspicuous area first. Avoid acetone or harsh solvents; they can damage the PVC surface.
Rust stains (from nearby metal):
Apply a rust stain remover designed for PVC or fibreglass. Follow product instructions.
What NOT to Use
- ×Abrasive scrubbing pads or steel wool
- ×Acetone or nail polish remover
- ×Harsh chemical solvents
- ×Pressure washers on high settings (can force water into panel joints)
Checking Post Footings
Once a year, check that your posts are still plumb and the concrete footings are intact.
- Push gently on each post: there should be no movement
- Check the post is still vertical using a spirit level
- Look for cracks in the concrete footing at ground level
- Check for any soil erosion around the base of posts
If a post has moved, the footing may need to be repoured. This is rare but can happen in very sandy or waterlogged soils.
Gate Maintenance
Gates have moving parts (hinges and latches) that benefit from occasional attention.
Every 12 Months
- Check hinge bolts are tight; tighten if loose
- Apply a small amount of lubricant (WD-40 or similar) to hinge pins
- Check latch operation: it should click closed firmly
- Check gate swing: it should swing freely without dragging
If the Gate Sags
Gate sag is usually caused by loose hinge bolts or a post that has moved slightly. Tighten hinge bolts first. If the gate still sags, check the post is plumb and adjust hinge position if needed.
After Storm Inspection
After major storms or high winds, do a quick inspection:
- Check all panels are still seated in post channels
- Check posts are still plumb
- Look for any cracked or broken panels
- Check gate operation
PVC panels are designed to flex under wind load. Minor flexing is normal and doesn't indicate damage. If a panel has cracked or broken, it can be replaced individually.
How to Replace a Damaged Panel
One of the advantages of PVC fencing is that individual panels can be replaced without removing the entire fence.
- Remove the post cap on one side of the damaged panel
- Slide the panel upward out of the bottom channel
- Tilt the panel and remove from the top channel
- Slide the new panel into the top channel first
- Lower into the bottom channel
- Replace the post cap
The whole process takes about 20 minutes. Contact us to order replacement panels; we keep stock of all ranges.
Preventing Staining
A few simple habits keep your fence looking its best:
- Trim vegetation: plants growing against the fence trap moisture and cause green staining
- Avoid sprinkler contact: hard water leaves mineral deposits over time
- Keep soil away from post bases: soil contact accelerates staining at the base
- Clean after construction work: cement splatter and paint should be removed promptly before they set
Does PVC Fencing Fade?
Our panels are UV stabilised, which means the white colour is locked in at the manufacturing stage. The UV stabiliser prevents the yellowing and chalking that affects lower-quality PVC products.
Standard UV stabilised PVC fencing maintains its colour for 15–20 years under normal Queensland conditions. After that, some very slight yellowing may occur, but it's gradual and barely noticeable.
Summary: PVC Fencing Maintenance at a Glance
- ✓Rinse with hose 2–4 times per year
- ✓Check posts and gate hardware annually
- ✓Inspect after major storms
- ✓Replace individual panels if damaged
- ✓Never paint, stain, or treat
That's it. PVC fencing is genuinely low maintenance, not just marketing language.
