The White Picket Fence, Without the Painting

The most classic fence in Australia, made in modern PVC. All the kerb appeal of a white timber picket, without the rot, repainting, or warping that comes with it.

The short version

A white picket fence is the classic Australian front boundary: open, welcoming, and full of character. The problem was always the timber. It needs repainting every few years and eventually rots. PVC solves that. The Henley range gives you the exact picket look at a classic 1.2m height, in a finish that stays white for decades with zero maintenance. From $139.75 a set.

The picket look, without the timber problems

For a hundred years the white picket fence meant painted timber, and painted timber means a job that never really finishes. The white you love on day one starts chalking within a couple of summers. The palings closest to the ground draw up moisture and rot. In a humid Queensland yard the boards cup and warp, and the whole thing needs sanding and repainting every three to five years to keep looking the part.

PVC keeps the look and removes the chore. The white is built into the material rather than painted on top, so it does not flake or fade. It cannot rot, because there is no timber to rot. It will not warp in the heat or play host to termites. You get the picket fence you actually wanted: the one that still looks freshly painted ten years from now.

Three white picket styles

Every Henley picket is a 1.2m white PVC fence. The difference is the top of the paling. Pick the profile that suits your home.

Flat Cap

A clean, square-topped picket: the crispest, most contemporary read on the classic.

Pointed Cap

The picket most people picture, with a gentle point on every paling. Traditional and warm.

Square Alternating

Alternating heights for a softer, decorative rhythm along the street frontage.

A picket at the front, privacy at the back

A picket fence is built for the front yard. It frames the garden and keeps the street presence open and friendly. It is not meant to give you privacy, and at 1.2m it will not. Most homeowners pair a Henley picket across the front with a taller, solid range down the sides and rear, where privacy actually matters.

Because every range shares the same white finish and post system, the transition from picket to privacy is seamless. See the privacy guide for the back boundary, or compare the picket against semi-privacy in Henley vs Oxford.

What a white picket fence costs

Henley pickets start from $139.75 a set including GST, covering the panel, posts and caps. The total for your fence depends on the length of your frontage and the number of gates. There are no hidden costs and the price you see is the price you pay. For the full breakdown by style and height, read the PVC fencing cost guide, or get an exact figure for your property in a couple of minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a white picket fence still in style?
Yes. The white picket fence is one of the few fence styles that never dates. It reads as classic Australian kerb appeal whether the house behind it is a Queenslander, a cottage, or a new build. The only thing that has changed is the material: most new white picket fences are now PVC rather than painted timber, because the look lasts without the upkeep.
How much does a white picket fence cost?
A PVC white picket fence starts from around $166 per set (panel, posts and caps, inc GST) in the Henley range at 1.2m. Final cost depends on the length of your frontage, the number of gates, and whether you install it yourself or have us install it. You can draw your fence on a map of your property and get an exact quote online in a couple of minutes.
Does a PVC picket fence turn yellow?
Quality UV-stabilised PVC does not yellow. The white is part of the material, not a surface coat, and the compound is stabilised for Australian sun. Cheap, non-stabilised plastic can go brittle and discolour over time, which is exactly why the stabilisation matters, and why we back ours with a long structural warranty.
What is the best height for a front picket fence?
1.2m is the classic front-fence height for a picket, and it is what the Henley range is built around. It marks the boundary and frames the garden without closing off the street. Most councils allow a 1.2m front fence without approval, but height and setback rules vary, so always check your local council before you order.
Which lasts longer, a PVC or timber picket fence?
PVC, comfortably. A painted timber picket needs repainting every three to five years and will eventually rot at the base and warp in the humidity. Most are replaced within 15 years. A PVC picket holds its white finish for decades with nothing more than an occasional hose-down. Over the life of the fence, PVC costs less and looks better for longer.
Can I get a matching white picket gate?
Yes. Every Henley picket style has a matching single or double gate kit with the same profile and finish, so the gate reads as part of the fence rather than an afterthought. Add it to your fence when you build your quote.
